Sprint Cup: Jimmie Johnson wins the Dover 400

Thursday, August 27th, 2009
Stephen Lars asked:

lly, Jimmie Johnson, the current champion of the NASCAR Sprint Cup, won his second victory of the season and the number 42 of his career as a professional driver. This magnificent triumph of Johnson came in the thirteenth day of the Sprint Cup Series, in the event called the Dover 400, which was held at the Dover International Speedway. Johnson, who departed in the eighth position on the grid, with great shrewdness demonstrated once more his incredible driving skills and remained at the head of the fierce competition over 298 laps of the 400 scheduled. The daring driver of the Hendrick Motorsports team was able to maintain an absolute control of his vehicle, which responded in the best way when pushed to its maximum potential. Since the start of the competition, the intentions of the intrepid driver of the Chevrolet # 48 were evident; he was clearly trying to get to the head of the race. As soon as the race started, Johnson accelerated and surpassed the other drivers quickly, starting to set the pace of the race, which he headed over a considerable period of time. The struggle to occupy the first position was a strong and heated confrontation between Johnson, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle. These three drivers captured the attention of the crowd that was at the Dover Circuit and their constant attempts to exceed each other put the excitement on the competition. Although at times there were changes in the drivers’ positions, the superiority of Jimmie Johnson over the other drivers, along with his absolute control over his car, made him stand out in a confrontation where only the strongest and that with the highest level of concentration could remain in his position throughout the lengthy race, which became increasingly complex due to the strong pressure that was putting the group that was setting the pace in the track. With his great ability and unbeatable skills, Jimmie Johnson proved why he has been the Sprint Cup champion for three consecutive seasons. Although this year has not been particularly great for him, since has won only two races so far in the tournament, Johnson remains firm on his goal to reach the top position of the standings once again; he is currently is in third place with 1789 points, behind Jeff Gordon, his teammate, who has added 1807 points, while Tony Stewart is in the first place with 1853 units. During all the race, Johnson was constant in his fight to win and being aware that his effort was paying off and that he was receiving all the support from his team, he took the risky decision of entering the pits area to make a change of tires when there were only 36 laps remaining. In doing so, he lost his position as leader, but when he came back to the track he started fighting for the lead again. Following his winner instincts, Johnson moved up as fast as he could to reach Stewart, joining him into a very even fight, in which Biffle also joined when there were only 10 laps to go. At this stage of the competition Johnson was unstoppable and his two closest pursuers were unable to do anything else but just observe how the three-time champion crossed the finish line as the checkered flag waved, crowning himself as the winner.

How Do XM And Sirius Satellite Radio Compare?

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
Jim Johnson asked:

If you want to take advantage of the satellite radio boom which is picking up steam with almost every passing day, you only have two major choices if you live in the US, either XM or Sirius. Both providers offer high quality, digital programming with over 100 channels to listen to so you can never run out of something good on the radio.

But what are the differences between the two services? It makes sense to figure that out in advance and make the right decision for you, as the equipment that you buy that enables you to receive the signal from one of the providers, cannot be used with the other provider if you decide that you want to make a change for some reason. So that means that examining the programming options from both XM and Sirius is an important step in the buying process, as it will be very expensive if you decide to change after the equipment has been purchased.

In actuality though, there are more similarities between the two providers than there are differences, especially in the field of music. Each has over 60 channels of music to tune into including all of the major generes like pop, hip-hop, blues, all kinds of rock, country, jazz, classical, as well as dance music and music by the decades (70s, 80s, 90s, etc.) So in this area, either one will no doubt provide you with all the music programming that you could ever need.

The differences in programming start to show up in the talk radio and sports radio sections though. In sports, XM broadcasts baseball games and Nascar, whereas Sirius has committed to more overall sports programming including all NFL footbal games, most NBA games, NHL, and Nascar. So if you are a sports fan, the differences can be important in this area.

In talk radio, one of the biggest draws for Sirius is Howard Stern. Of course, his radio show has been very popular for many years and has lots of listeners, so if he is a favorite of yours, you can only find him on Sirius. But there are other talk shows available as well, although Sirius tends to attract more celebrity talk shows hosted by the likes of Martha Stewart, Jimmy Buffet, and more. One other advantage in the talk area, is that Sirius also carries NPR, which has a wide fan base as well. The list is constantly changing though, so check the latest channel lineup to see what talk channels are being offered at this point.

Both services offer always-on, everywhere service that is available no matter where you live in the US, and the equipment for receiving each service is pretty extensive, with XM maybe having a slight edge in the portability field.

So look over the channel lineups carefully, choose your provider and enjoy the next step in high quality, digital entertainment.

Nascar: Johnson Listed for the 2007 US Sports Academy Athlete of the Year

Monday, August 24th, 2009
Julie Smith asked:

The 2007 NASCAR Nextel season came to its end Friday evening with NASCAR Award banquet at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel where the driver, Jimmie Johnson who had a record breaking season, pilling up 1,663 points during the 10-race Chase Cup received the championship’s trophy. No less credit received the other Hendrick driver, Jeff Gordon who also posted numbers that would have been a sure ticket to Title Town in any other year, winning six races. A record money amount ($32.8M) was distributed between the top 10 drivers (over $1 million each).

Besides the recognition, Johnson definitely got the hang of being the champion for a consecutive year; he earned $7,317,499 from the Nextel Cup point’s fund, bringing his season winnings to $15,313,920; it also brings his career earnings to a $59.5 million. In addition to his winnings, he also received $350,000 for winning four special awards (The Goodyear Gatorback Fastest Lap, The Dow Automotive Strategic Call of the Race Award, the Sunoco Diamond Performance and the Goodyear Award).

Moreover, the 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet driver is now listed for the 2007 USA Sports Academy Athlete of the Year award presented by USATODAY.com and MSNBC.com. The chance for him to acquire another title this year is worth thanks to his four straight victories beginning in Martinsville and 10 victories through the post-season, a two digits record not seen since 1998.

The 2007 poll for male athletes includes: pitcher Josh Beckett (Boston Red Sox), quarterback Tom Brady from the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay, Ethiopian runner Haile Gebrselassie, Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps and golfer Tiger Woods.

Fans worldwide select the athletes by voting online beginning December 1 and ending December 25. An overall winner is selected, along with male and female athletes of the year. Federer was the 2006 overall winner; Woods the ’06 male athlete of the year. Johnson finished third in last year’s voting. Hopefully, he will close his season with another award.

Jimmie Johnson Scores Chevrolet Its 4th Impala Ss Victory

Thursday, August 20th, 2009
Mike Bartley asked:

James Kenneth Johnson, popularly known as Jimmie Johnson, took his fourth victory of the season and the ninth for Chevy in an atypical day race at the Richmond International Raceway. Rescheduled from Saturday night due to rain, the 300-mile, 400-lap race witnessed the Chevy Impala SS drivers brush the top four finishing spots. To stress, seven out of top ten finishers were Chevy drivers.

Johnson, the driver of the No. 48 Lowe’s Impala SS and the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion, has this to say: “This means the world to me to win here. We haven’t been that strong here. It reminds me a lot of Indy last year where we came back and we were able to beat a track that’s tough on us. I think this car has been an opportunity for myself and for the team to kind of learn the right setup; feeling the right the rhythm at this track. We did well at being here. I was hoping one-two-three for Hendrick Motorsports, it was awesome racing with my teammate Kyle Busch.”

In his rookie year, Johnson became the first rookie in the Cup series to sweep both races at a track when he won both races at the Dover International Speedway. He became the first rookie ever to lead in the point standings. In addition, Johnson is the only driver to finish in the top five in the standings in his first five full seasons.

How does it feel to wear the Virginia Tech hat? Johnson said, “I feel honored to win this race here in Virginia. Obviously what took place, no one could ever describe. It’s just so sad, I don’t even know where to start. I didn’t go to school there, have a lot of close friends that did, great people that work at Hendrick Motorsports that have and certainly want to dedicate this win to them.”

Johnson ran near the front for most of the race, taking the lead for good with 20 laps to go. With a performance likened to that of ACT, he finished ahead of teammate Kyle Busch, the driver of the No. 5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Impala SS and Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 FedEx Impala SS, who finished second and third, respectively.

Jeff Gordon, the owner of Johnson’s Impala SS, finished behind Hamlin. Another teammate of Johnson, the driver of the No. 24 DuPont Impala SS, kept his points in the driver with his fourth-place finish. Johnson’s win pushed him up to second place in the standings up from fourth.

Richmond’s race was the fourth race for Chevy’s new Impala SS race car. The Impala SS has won all four new-generation race car events this season with Hendrick Motorsports - Johnson’s team. Chevy drivers also hold nine of the top twelve spots in the series standings. Additionally, Chevrolet has won nine of ten races in the ‘07 series to date and leads in the Manufacturer’s Cup chase with 87 points.

Finishing second was Kyle Busch, the driver of No. 5 Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Impala SS. “That was a good run for our Kellogg’s/CARQUEST Impala SS. You know we struggle in qualifying with these things but we seem to get it when the race turns around so we also want to thank all my sponsors and all the people that are behind us,” Busch quipped.

When asked whether his car fell off on the last restart or Johnson’s car just got better, Busch said, “Well both. I think mine fell off a little bit and his got better, because we kind of gapped out. Normally we could run together but the restart before I was a little bit better than he was and I got a good start and I got down in one and two and got a good jump on everybody but that last caution came out again. I think he would have caught us anyway. He was a little bit better overall than we were but it’s still a good day for Hendrick Motorsports - one, two, four, I believe.”

Denny Hamlin, the driver of No. 11 FedEx Express Impala SS and finished third in the event, noted: “We definitely had an up-and-down day but for the most part our car was pretty good. We were coming on there at the end and got caught behind a lot of cars. It seemed like the fist couple of cars could clear and we just had a tough time running on the outside. For the most part I was happy about it. The FedEx Chevrolet was a winning car there at the end but we just didn’t have the track position.”

Driving No. 24 DuPont Impala SS is Jeff Gordon who finished fourth. Describing his race, Gordon said, “We’ve got to be proud of that. This has been one of our worst tracks. To come out here in the top five just tells you what kind of improvements we’ve made with the DuPont Chevrolet team. We had great track position and we were able to maintain that. That probably helped us out for the most part. At one time I thought we had the car to beat and then we made some adjustments trying to keep up with the changing conditions of the track and just lost it.”

He added, “I’ve got to congratulate Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch. Those guys drove one heck of a race. We’re so proud to have those guys at Hendrick Motorsports. I was trying so hard to get that one-two-three Hendrick finish but just couldn’t pull it off. Denny Hamlin drove a great race as well. Congratulations to Jimmie and all those guys. We’ll just take our top-five and move on from here.”
